The IMEX Place Leadership Report Gives You the Budget Argument. Here's How to Win the Execution One Too.

The IMEX Place Leadership Report Gives You the Budget Argument. Here's How to Win the Execution One Too.

IMEX's new white paper makes the economic case for business events. We look at what it means for teams trying to justify and then deliver bigger event budgets.

It's been over a month since IMEX released a white paper titled "Place leadership and the business events sector", and it does something genuinely useful: it gives event professionals a research-backed argument for why business events deserve serious investment.

The paper sets out how conferences, corporate gatherings, and industry events shape the economic and social fabric of the cities and regions that host them. We're talking about job creation, inward investment, knowledge transfer, and long-term destination reputation. These are not soft benefits. They are the kind of numbers that resonate in a boardroom.

The internal budget conversation just got easier

For agencies pitching clients and for in-house event teams trying to hold their budgets against cost-cutting pressure, this research is genuinely useful ammunition. The argument that events are a cost center has always been lazy thinking, but it's been hard to counter without credible data. IMEX has now provided some of that data.

If you're heading into a planning cycle and you need to justify a larger or maintained event budget, the IMEX white paper gives you a foundation. Consider using it to:

  • Frame your event program as an investment with measurable returns rather than a line item to be trimmed

  • Connect your company's events to broader economic and reputational outcomes that resonate with senior stakeholders

  • Benchmark your activity against the wider business events sector to show strategic alignment

Winning the argument is step one. Delivering is step two.

Here's the thing though, getting budget sign-offs is only the first challenge. The harder task, and the one that actually determines whether you get the same budget next year, is delivering an event that justifies every pound of it.

Larger budgets tend to mean more complex events. More attendees, more ticket tiers, more stakeholders with opinions, more on-the-day logistics to manage. The teams that struggle are usually not the ones who lack ambition. They're the ones whose planning infrastructure hasn't kept pace with the scale of what they're being asked to produce.

We see this regularly at Mingloft. An in-house team secures a meaningful budget for a flagship event, then spends weeks stitching together a registration tool from one vendor, a ticketing setup from another, email comms from a third, and a check-in process held together by a spreadsheet and goodwill. The event happens. It goes reasonably well. But the team is exhausted, the data is fragmented, and the post-event report takes longer to produce than anyone expected.

What good execution actually looks like

When your planning infrastructure works, the budget argument becomes self-reinforcing. You run a well-managed event, you have the data to show it, and you walk into the next budget conversation with evidence rather than anecdote.

That means having registration, ticketing, attendee communications, and on-the-day management in one place. It means your team is spending time on the things that genuinely improve the attendee experience, not on exporting CSV files between platforms at 11 pm.

The IMEX white paper makes the strategic case for investing in business events. We think there's an equally strong case for investing in the tools that help you execute them well. The two arguments go together.

If you're heading into a budget cycle and want to talk about how Mingloft can help your team deliver on the promise of that investment, we'd be glad to show you what we've built.
